This form of broadcasting relies on the public to fund its programs. This can be from TV licenses.
The point of this form of funding is to try to find the middle ground between commercial funding and state funding, for example, the BBC which uses this method of funding in order to look unbiased by commercial ideals, (selling their audience) and political ideas(propaganda). This means that it can keep its transparent look.
Commercial Broadcasting
This form of broadcasting is not publicly funded, it relies on advertising and selling audiences in order to fund programmes, a good example of this is ITV. However, organisations that use this form of broadcasting have regulations on them that obliges them to keep transparent. for example ITV has to provide one hour of religious programmes. This however causes problems for organisations as they rely on advertising for their funds meaning that if they have to keep their transparency they will need to have programmes that will be less views and therefore they will have a cheaper advertising space. there is also another way that commercial broadcasting can gain funds; this is by subscription, for example, Sky. Sky sell packages with a Sky Box; this is done in order for them to maximize their income.
Corporate and private ownership
Corporate ownership is when a company owns one of more texts, for example Disney. This however means that the text can be biased as they have the views of the person/s that own the company.

Private ownership is when one individual or small group of people owns one type of media. This type of ownership means that the media is not owned by the public however it can show less bias than the corporate owned media as they are smaller companies and are more connected to the society than the bigger corporately owned companies. An example of this is the Rural Media Company that state that they are helping rural and disadvantaged communities with their creativity in order to increase people's confidence, developing skills, and helping people have their say.
Vertical integration -
This is when a company, for example News Corporation buys other organisations such as Twenty Century Fox in order to increase the companies income. This, however means that the media becomes globalised and will not belong to one country. Take for example a film studio, for a film to come out there are certain stages; first the studio has to produce the film and send it to a distribution company; then the distribution company makes copies of the film and rents them out to cinemas and then the cinema makes money from the audience. However a studio might buy the distribution company; which means they get more money back from the cinema as well as the money from the distribution company. A bigger company can go further and but a chain of cinemas to make even more money; an example of this is Time Warner which followed this scheme and resulted in having Warner Villages, (cinemas).
Horizontal integration/monopolization
-
This is when a company buys another company that might have already gone to vertical integration, for example, Disney buying LucasArts. This means that the company now has ownership of another company buying out the competition and increasing net income. This means that media corporations become conglomerates and will monopolise the market.
