Is Television News a " window on the world"?

Television news tries to represent itself as a window on the world . However we look at  how the news is made we realize that this is not the case.
This can be seen in the construction of the product . Lets start with the opening sequence. . then there are the newsreaders they have a disconnected face even they smile this. They can not show emotion as this would take away from the  objective feel the news work so hard to project.  There is another problem the ways news readers are assembled while the male is older and looks more serious, which signifies importance power, and truthfulness.  , the female reader is younger this is done in order to attract the audience.
This idea  however this baked up The  and regulations of the country . The content seen in the news is manly
regulated by Ofcom  which has set rules concerning broadcasting this by section 5 of the broadcasting codes Section Five: Due Impartiality and Due Accuracy and Undue Prominence of Views and Opinions. This sets the rules that news broad casts
 For example

5.1 News, in whatever form, must be reported with due accuracy and presented with due impartiality.

5.2 Significant mistakes in news should normally be acknowledged and corrected on air quickly. Corrections should be appropriately scheduled.

5.3 No politician may be used as a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news programmes unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified. In that case, the political allegianceof that person must be made clear to the audience
Though they do hold over most broadcaster this not the case for the BBC . As the BBC is mainly regulated by BBC Tust , They are there to make sure that all the programming in maid with the audince in mind. There they are very careful sure that News Programs are transparent. The Agreement accompanying the BBC Charter requires us to do all we can to ensure controversial subjects are treated with due impartiality in our news and other output dealing with matters of public policy or political or industrial controversy. But we go further than that, applying due impartiality to all subjects. However, its requirements will vary.

And finally even the structure of a news story itself backs up the notion of simply 'showing us reality. This completely true as the concept of truth is created. After an event  happened and it becomes news first the news reader has to mention the event then the actuality footage is given  the rest of the story as it is very important for the story.
The news can't show reality in a completely unbiased way this the new have go through a process before they reach the screen . This known as the gate keeping process :
To begin with the news to be found to this the media relies on sources such as the courts , police, embassies, press offices. If the events were not recorder by these sources then will nor become news . Then a story has to contain  news values . A list of these has been devised by  Galtung and Ruge in to be to categorize why stories are chosen. Some of the are :

  • Threshold: The bigger impact the story has, the more people it affects, the more extreme the effect or the more money or resources it involves, the better its chances of hitting the news stands.
  • Unexpectedness: If an event is out of the ordinary it will be more likely to make it into the news than an everyday occurrence would. As Charles A. Dana famously put it, "If a dog bites a man, that's not news. But if a man bites a dog, that is news!''
  • Continuity: A story which is already in the news gathers a kind of momentum – the running story. This is partly because news teams are already in place to report the story, and partly because previous reportage may have made the story more accessible to the public
If an event does not have any values as news item i will be dropped
There are other items  to be gathered in order for the event to a news item . Thes are things such as           obtaining extra fact, sound and video in order to build  your story. While this can be easily done the law    sometime stops certain stories did can be done by using D-notices which work as way  of tilling the media that can be broadcast as it might contain classified information etc.
There is also the idea of funding while certain will have more money . This case problems as if the comany does not have enough found big stories could not happen as they could not to send reporters to location. Which that might not be able to obtain images for The bbc and Tienanmen  Square. This also ties in with of competition news companies would report the same thing than lose the Chance to do it and lose their audience.
If story comes in late and there no time to introduce it in news then i will be dropped this is also tha  story that has been allocated a time slot in the program however it does no longer work because  of technical difficulty such as a satellite link hat the story might be replaced with another story

In conclusion though news  try be as transparent and represent all the they can . They are not true window and Therefore  the show a full image of the world
